Turin campus is equipped with three specialist laboratories designed to support students across different areas of design: the fashion laboratory, the light model-making laboratory, and the photography and VR laboratory. Each space is equipped with professional tools consistent with the practices actually used in companies within the sector.

The laboratories are available to students during the relevant classes, under lecturer supervision: each working session is built into the academic pathway, so that laboratory practice reinforces the theoretical content addressed in class.

Working in the laboratory is not an accessory experience: it is the moment when the project moves from idea to prototype, from sketch to finished garment, from storyboard to image. For this reason, IAAD. considers laboratories an integral part of teaching and embeds them in the study plans of all undergraduate courses.

Computer-equipped classrooms and professional software

In addition to the specialist laboratories, IAAD. has computer-equipped classrooms with networked PCs and a very broad software park, including both standard applications and specialist suites for product design, visual communication, photography, illustration and immersive environments.

These rooms are used mainly for teaching activities: classes, guided exercises and exams. Students do not need to install software independently or bear additional licence costs, because the entire digital working environment is already configured by IAAD. IT and kept up to date.

The integration between physical laboratories and computer-equipped classrooms makes it possible to work across the entire project cycle: from digital research to modelling, from physical prototyping to final image retouching.

Laboratory tutoring: individual and small-team support

To support students during the development of academic projects, IAAD. provides a tutoring service dedicated to the laboratories. This is additional study time beyond class hours: the student — either individually or in a small team — can access laboratories and equipment under the supervision of an IAAD. lecturer, in a more focused setting dedicated to the specific assignment.

Laboratory tutoring responds to a concrete need: some projects require finishing time, technical trials or stages that do not always fit within class hours. Having a lecturer available during these sessions makes it possible to resolve technical doubts, optimise the use of equipment and strengthen operational autonomy.

Tutoring is particularly useful at three key moments in the pathway:

in the final stages of an assignment, when the project must reach a presentable level of finish;

during prototyping, when the use of tools requires close guidance;

in preparation for exams and reviews, in order to consolidate both method and technique.

IAAD. laboratories within the study pathways

Laboratories are not neutral spaces: each one is designed to interact with specific undergraduate courses and teaching modules. Understanding where and how a laboratory is used helps students — and applicants — better grasp what it means to study design in a practical way.

The fashion laboratory
The fashion laboratory is the operational core of the undergraduate course in Fashion Design: this is where collections move from moodboard to garment, through tailoring tests, pattern development and finishing. Tutoring in the fashion laboratory is especially in demand in the final months of the semester, when collections must be presented to lecturers and public events approach.

The light model-making laboratory
The light model-making laboratory mainly supports Product Design and Interior Design courses. It is the space where 1:1 prototypes — packaging, volumetric models, assembly tests — are built using materials such as cardboard, light wood, technical foams and panels. It is a laboratory that teaches students to think with their hands.

The photography and VR laboratory
The photography and VR laboratory covers two areas that are increasingly interconnected today: the two-dimensional image (still life, portrait, product) and the immersive experience (VR environments, 360° content). It is used by Photography, Graphic Design and Communication Design courses and by specialist modules on new visual narratives.

Computer-equipped classrooms as an everyday laboratory
Computer-equipped classrooms may not have the visibility of a “physical” laboratory, but in practice they are the everyday laboratory of every IAAD. student. All professional software — from Adobe packages to 3D engines, from vector CAD tools to rendering tools — is installed and centrally updated. This means students can focus on the project rather than on the logistics of tools.

Frequently asked questions about laboratories and tutoring

Which laboratories are available at IAAD.?

The Turin campus has three teaching laboratories: fashion laboratory, light model-making laboratory, and photography and VR laboratory.
