IAAD. Event : 18th – 22th April
Bra-Very Bar, the third edition of the project at Fuorisalone 2024
IAAD. Design Workshop 2024 – XIV edition
Dates
19-24 February 2024
Location
IAAD. Turin
Every academic year IAAD. devotes the third week of February to research by organizing IAAD. DESIGN WORKSHOP, a synergistic workshop system that represents a moment of participated thought, whose aim is to invite students, professors, and cultural representatives to constructively confront the problems and opportunities of the community. Thoughts to be transformed into projects, all within a week of teamwork.
IAAD. Design Workshops are open to every third year IAAD. academic student and to host students’ delegations from other Italian and international colleges. Once the wider thematic area is defined, it is then organized into different workshops approaching it from different points of view.
This fourteenth edition (February 19-24, 2024), titled “DESIGN – A DIALOGUE WITHOUT BOUNDARIES,” has been planned in cooperation with Itinerari Paralleli and will focus on the concept of “border“.
Are we aware how influenced our lives are by lines and borders that define who we are, how we live and probably more than that, what we “can’t be” as individuals and professionals? Interconnection, multichannel, cross-sectoral approaches fill our vocabulary in everyday life as designers, while the world keeps on growing and conflicting around divisions based on physical, cultural, economic boundaries.
Yet creativity can’t be confined, defined, and oriented on a straight line of purpose. That’s why, as designers, we should grasp the unstoppable need to use our potential to solve division and promote melting-pot processes and solutions for all.
Not by chance, the World Design Capital 2024 will be hosted by the binational region of San Diego (US) – Tijuana (Mexico), one of the unique experiences where physical crossing is fostering contamination on different levels and disciplines, so as in Europe, one of the next European Cultural Capital will be hosted by the cross-border cities of Gorizia (ITA) – Nova Gorica (SLO). Two clear examples of how creativity is moving to counteract a global tendency to move following boundaries and divisions. For this reason, the 2024 Design Workshop edition is asking students, teachers, and the AD Education community to imagine new opportunities and solutions to solve present divisions and contribute to the role of design as a dialogue without boundaries.
Moving through invisible boundaries
Biases and prejudice shape our thoughts, language, and relations. How can we keep on pushing for a less hostile society, promoting the value of difference from a creative perspective?
workshop
BEYOND BOUNDARIES: TACKLING MENTAL HEALTH PREJUDICE THROUGH URBAN CULTURAL HERITAGE
Team Leaders: Giulia Sala, Irene Tozzi and Asia Mounsabi (Mad In Design)
workshop
GENERATIVE MUSIC AND SOUNDSCAPES
Team Leader: Elia Pellegrino
We seem doomed to an artificial future, but can human empathy and perspective still be a source for hybrid solutions to discover new worlds of phygital consistency?
workshop
VIRTUAL REALITY: A NEW TOOL FOR EDUCATION?
Team Leader: Jacopo Gottlieb
Even if under constant debate, urban spaces are still a monologue in terms of mobility, work/life rhythm, public opportunities. Equality and equity for city access is still a relevant goal that design should have as a polar star. How can the design community contaminate competences and skills to achieve inclusive communities?
workshop
Team Leaders: Dario Olivero and Alessandro Argenio
workshop
Team Leader: Alberto Piazzalunga (Itinerari Paralleli)
Design has obviously accepted the need to adopt nature-based, sustainable products and services. But what is still on the agenda is how to balance consumption with a sustainable production system. What are the main obstacles, challenges, and boundaries for a full Just Transition?

Date:

Time:
10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The main idea of the “BRA-VERY BAR” project deals with the concept of “the courage to change“, understood as the ability to subvert or re-design – but also re-program – the daily rituals that define styles of unsustainable life or impact on the environment.
During the workshop planned with KRILL DESIGN and ELECTROLUX the attention will be focused on the conception and realization of a new functional or emotional object (or a group of objects).
The product will be created thanks to a 3D printer wich uses, as a component material, a bio-resins derived from feed waste.
The work intends to associate the identification of the new object with a series of strong concepts, capable of conveying the idea of change and the importance of triggering sustainable and circular processes.

Workshop Leader: Francesco Faccin – Industrial designer & Strategic Director of Product design IAAD.

KRILL DESIGN
Krill Design is an Italian design studio specialized in the development of new design products within a 100% circular and sustainable process. It was born in 2018 from the meeting of three people sharing a passion for innovation, sustainability and design: Ivan Calimani, Martina Lamperti and Yack di Maio. The consideration of the three founders is quite simple: there are already several supply chains that intercept and recover waste from the production of paper, glass and plastic, while for the organic by-products of the food chain there are no virtuous solutions. The three founders have converted this problem into an opportunity, experimenting with the creation of innovative materials, which, combined with the 3D printing method, have given rise to a successful and ecological production process. Krill Design was awarded as Best Performer for circular economy services and recognized by the World Economic Forum as an example of sustainability. Krill Design joins the BeCorp NetZero 2030 program.

The main idea of the “BRA-VERY BAR” project deals with the concept of “the courage to change“, understood as the ability to subvert or re-design – but also re-program – the daily rituals that define styles of unsustainable life or impact on the environment.
In the specific case of REPOWER the attention is focused on the elaboration of some messages useful to transmit this meaning of “courage“, also connected to a conscious use of energy.
The laboratory is therefore oriented to develop, even in the synthesis of the time available, a series of Claims that may have the ambition of triggering a reflection on the theme. IAAD., In synergy with the other selected students of the AD Education Group, intends to collaborate with Scuola Holden to “design” words of interest, of impact, then taking care to finalize the output with which these can be disseminated.
Regarding this point it is assumed that cargo bike LAMBRO are used as a “display” in motion, developing effect graphics that can dress the vehicles in an original way and spread a thought.
The project of the word and that of its appearance intersect, in a laboratory that is certainly “courageous” and characterized by a certain originality of practice.
The outcomes of the Workshop could affect vehicle liveries for a semester.
The central concept of this project could inaugurate an ad-hoc communication season, it can in fact be hypothesized that, at regular intervals, the REPOWER E-Cargo Bikes can be “dressed” with different “courageous messages“, all created to raise awareness users to a more conscious use of energy resources.
