scholarships Contest A.Y. 2009/2010
The Istituto d’Arte Applicata e Design – Torino (IAAD) as any other year, presents a design contest to offer the possibility to win twelve scholarships to attend the first level after-diploma specializations (Bachelor).
The four specializations - Transportation design, Industrial design, Interior & Furniture design and
Advertising & Graphic design, are officially recognized by EABHES – European Accreditation Board of Higher Schools for the obtaining of the European Bachelor of Science in Design.
This year the main theme of the contest was dedicated to environmental sustainability: the purpose is to suggest the sustainable design as solution for an eco friendly way to project.
The related themes for the assignment of scholarships are promoted by IAAD in collaboration with
Greenpeace.
Greenpeace, coherently with its mission, uses direct actions to remark environmental problems and to promote solutions for a sustainable future: www.greenpeace.org/italy.
The climate change, the environment and the renewable energy sources today are preeminent
problems for our planet. Not always the right consideration of a sustainable development, reckoned as unique solution useful to preserve quality and quantity of everyone’s legacy, is highly regarded.
The concept of natural balance is not yet a priority for the economic development compatible with
social equity and with ecosystem.
Design, obviously, can’t solve every problem related with environment and sustainability, but it can
represent an important agent for the changing and an amplifier of the knowledge about these topics. Once again the design could be a contemporary answer useful to face today problems.
Sustainability, in design lexicon, means that products and services must be planned with environmental sensibility.
• Transportation Design Department
The candidate must project an ideal urban vehicle, considering the problem of parking, traffic and
alternative energetic sources to reduce at least CO2 emission in the atmosphere.
• Industrial Design Department
The candidate must project an object useful for the house, exclusively conceived with recycled
materials or re-using everyday objects (ex. a staircase becoming a bookcase, tea bags sewed up
becoming curtains).
• Interior and Furniture Design Department
The candidate must project his/her ideal space, setting it out exclusively with eco friendly materials and products.
• Advertising and Graphic Design Department
The candidate must create a poster, which fully represents the spirit and attitude of Greenpeace.

Transportation Design
1° Daniele De Martino (scholarship amounting to the 100% of the attendance fee)
It has been awarded the original concept of an individual vehicle, which takes its shape from the lines of a folding wheelchair. Nice shape, fresh and modern architecture. Ergonomics binds perfectly to the agility for citizen use and to innovative spirit.
2° Francesco Paglia (scholarship amounting to the 50% of the attendance fee)
Interesting approach for a capacious city car for 4 people. The shapes and materials, in a modern vision, are very consistent with the nature.
3° Marco Selvaggi (scholarship amounting to the 20% of the attendance fee)
Consistency between the initial thoughts and the logical approach to the feasibility of the idea.
Courageous attempt of graphic expression.
Special mention:
Gerardo Delgado Martinez: the freshness of a "no car" for people’s transport. Lightweight and essential.
Simon Jody Lazzar: research of style on the subject shown. More style than concept. Appreciates the innovative environmental effort although a little "esoteric."
Industrial design
1° Antonio Cascos Chamizo (scholarship amounting to the 100% of the attendance fee)
Feasible and well studied concept. Welcomed the thorough investigation of the project.
2° Marina Russo (scholarship amounting to the 50% of the attendance fee)
Interesting materials. The project needs more study on the structural discourse.
3° Marco Castagneris (scholarship amounting to the 20% of the attendance fee)
Complete draft, but not very visible and concrete the question of recycling.
Interior and furniture design
1° Marta Cammarere (scholarship amounting to the 100% of the attendance)
Good graphing skills well combined with the theme of the contest.
To highlight the effort to combine raw materials and materials with more sophisticated technologies (such as light pipes and photovoltaic panels).
2° Giulia Comero (scholarship amounting to the 50% of the attendance fee)
The works are expressive and effective. Good graphics capabilities. It should be explored the possibility of execution. It can be appreciated the effort to integrate in the project the appropriate use of materials and photovoltaic.
3° Roberta Liboriani (scholarship amounting to the 20% of the attendance fee)
Welcomed the project work as a whole, from the graphic point of view to the practical implementation as well. The project is incomplete in some parts. An attempt to integrate technologies and challenges not fully developed.
Special mention:
Francesco Ferraro Titin: Appreciated the effort of combining space and natural areas. Sufficient graphics skills, to revise planning technique.
Advertising and graphic design
1° Giacomo Giaccone (scholarship amounting to the 100% of the attendance fee)
Effective concept and sufficiently mature visual. The claim could be more effective. It captures one of the environmental issues more real and urgent (effect "Plastic Vortex") among those discussed, linked to the plastic as ubiquitous waste.
2° Rossella Sergi (scholarship amounting to the 50% of the attendance fee)
Concept and display are as simple as effective. Claim is suitable but not original. Much aligned to the most traditional communication of Greenpeace, which must remain valid and current.
3° Denis Caprara (scholarship amounting to the 20% of the attendance fee)
Visual and concept not so original, but used here with grace and efficiency. Claim adequate, except the wrong transcription of “Mowgli’s” name.
It focuses on the topic of extinction, although it would have been a verbal form to the future and a pay-off easier and more assertive (such as "Save the forests").
Special mention:
Andrea Monopoli: Pleasant the treatment as a magazine of urban design and architecture. Concept that it would be welcomed even if usual, a little out of the intervention strategies of Greenpeace.
Nicola Martini: Bill Bernbach’s quotation, maybe a little elementary, however, indicates some knowledge of the history of advertising. Appreciated the cleanliness of the layout, welcomed the message that the environment is mainly a matter of general approach. But for this, less usable in the communication strategies of Greenpeace, commonly focused on issues and slogans more specific.
The projects of the winners will be exposed on the occasion of the IAAD SUMMER PARTY 2009, which will be July 17th 2009, starting from 22.00 pm, at Pastis - Piazza Emanuele Filiberto in Torino, Italy.
